10 Steps to Creating Your Own Music EPK

As a publicist for recording artists I have witnessed a change in the way the press, musicians and my peers communicate. Although maxi singles and media kits are not a thing of the past, they are fast becoming dinosaurs. The Press and music execs are using New Media to find unsigned artists. Therefore it is imperative, that you adjust your promotional campaign to include New Media tools to present your best self.

MySpace is a New Media tool to house your fanbase. However, to communicate and promote yourself within the industry you need a new kind of media kit. You need an EPK.

The EPK is the acronym for Electronic Press Kit. You need both a hardcopy(preferably on a flash drive) and softcopy of your EPK online. You can upload your soft copy in MyMusicPromo.com.

Therefore, today we will show you how to setup your EPK.

There are ten items you need to include in your EPK:

1. A Bio/Fact Sheet. Above is a pic of a FACT sheet I created for national recording artist Darlene McCoy. It needs to be visually appealing and give a highlight to who you are and your current release. It should be crisp and you need to have a lot of white space. Also in this fact sheet you need to embed links to your snippets, videos, landing page, publicist, etc.
2. A Long Form Bio. The Fact Sheet Bio is limited to 250 words or less. The long form should showcase everything musically about you. It needs to be no more than 1000 words. Think of it like having a vitae.
3. Photo Page. Embed links to High Resolution Photos. You don't want to get an interview opp and all you have are cell phone pics. Get some professional photos done. Also include on this page a photo of you actually performing. Newspapers do not like static shots or posed pictures.
4. A MultiMedia Page. This should be the house for all your audio and video trinkets.
5. Endorsements. A page of professional endorsements from counterparts/
6. A Press Room Page. All your Press Releases and Media Coverage goes in there.
7. A contact Page. This page should list how people can contact or book you.
8. A request for more information Page. You can direct this to your mymusicpromo landing page.
9. Events/Calendar/Tour Page. List where you will be and when.
10. Fanbase Page. Where fans can connect with you.
